Learn more about the elements we utilize to create a beautiful & functional four season greenhouse design.

Choosing a Greenhouse Site

Placement of a greenhouse is important to the overall efficiency. We utilize site visits and aerial imaging along with our experience and expertise to help you locate the perfect site for your new greenhouse.

Location & Orientation

A properly placed four season solar structure needs to be oriented toward the South for maximum solar gain.

During the cold of winter, the South facing wall receives the majority of sunlight and is designed for maximum heat capture during these short days.

During the heat of summer, as the sun moves overhead, the roof receives the majority of sun and our design blocks enough sunlight to prevent severe overheating.

Site conditions including daily & seasonal shading patterns, prevailing winds and local structures are considered during the site evaluation to ensure maximum utility and function of your greenhouse through every season.

Choosing a Greenhouse Foundation

A greenhouse needs a solid foundation and we offer several types of foundations that create a permanent base for your 4-Season structure.

Cedar Beam Foundation

Cedar beams are the most common option for backyard greenhouses, they are beautiful, long lasting and economical.

Naturally rot resistant, our Cedar beams are preserved with natural penetrating oils and a hot wax seal.

"Toe-nailed" to the ground with 1/2" rebar and seated on pea gravel for drainage.

Cedar Beam & Pier Foundation

Formed concrete piers and cedar beam foundation provides the strongest beam system for high wind locations.

Piers are excavated to the minimum frost depth and the Cedar beams are attached with concrete anchor bolts.

Concrete Pad Foundation

A footed concrete pad provides a seamless flat floor and the durability of modern house foundation.

With moderate excavation and minimal forming, this is the most economical concrete foundation option.

Concrete Wall Foundation

A footed concrete wall requires extensive excavation and complex forming yet provides the most benefit to a winter production greenhouse.

With the ability to insulate the ground from freezing, this foundation is the most effective option for a completely passive greenhouse design.

Choosing a Greenhouse Floor

There are several floors to choose from that support varied types of gardening and personal style.

Open Earth Floor

A floor that is open to the earth allows for gardening (row crops) directly in the soil.

This is most commonly found in medium to large greenhouses but can also be adapted to a small design.

Gravel & Wood Pathway

A chipped stone floor allows for maximum drainage in a greenhouse and is an great way to add passive heat retention.

We always include a wood pathway for ease of movement, convenience and safety.

Our greenhouses are easily adaptable to be ADA compliant.

Decorative Paver Floor

Concrete pavers are a convenient way to create an aesthetic living space for furnishings and entertaining.

This floor allows water to drain through the bricks, is easy to clean and creates a flat safe surface.

Concrete Floor

Concrete floors are inherently a part of a concrete pad foundation, getting both a foundation and a solid flat floor.

A floor drain is recommended if heavy watering will occur.

This type of floor is ideal for hydro and aquaponics equipment and supplies.

Choosing a Greenhouse Frame

Sturdy frames that meet or exceed local codes for bearing forces, snow loads and high winds.

Timber Framed with Select Douglas Fir Lumber

Wood frames are our specialty, they are a sustainable and aesthetically pleasing material for a greenhouse.

We utilize Douglas Fir lumber for its strength and longevity.

Wood is easily adaptable to building code to create a safe and compliant structure.

We build our timber frames with timber joinery for maximum strength and preserve the wood with penetrating oils and beeswax seal.

Choosing the Right Glazing

Glazing is the transparent material that encases a greenhouse and lets the sunshine in. Multiple options are available that offer different appearances, insulation, shading values and light diffusion.

Multiwall Polycarbonate

This glazing material provides multiple greenhouse benefits.

From impact resistance to high insulative capacity, multi-wall has proven to be the standard in modern greenhouse design.

Our standard clear glazing utilizes 3/8" thick material for the walls and a 5/8" thick hurricane rated material for the roof.

Solid Polycarbonate

Similar to glass, solid clear polycarbonate provides an uninterrupted view through the greenhouse.

Clear panels are an option best utilized on the south facing wall of a greenhouse for extra light in the winter.

This material is impact resistant and will not break or shatter when put under extreme stress.

Opal 75% Shaded Roof Polycarbonate

Best option for light shading on roofs to protect low light plants such as orchids or ferns.

Utilized on walls for privacy near high use areas such as sidewalks or neighboring structures.

Charcoal 90% Shaded Roof Polycarbonate

Best option for heavy shading over work or leisure areas.

This material is recommended for people not plants.

Choosing a Ventilation System

Your greenhouse includes a ventilation system and you can choose either a passive system utilizing our solid cedar sash windows that automatically open or close using no electricity to operate; or choose an electric system that includes a 'Canarm' fan, thermostat and intake vents that actively move air through your greenhouse.

Passive Ventilation

'Univent' Non-electric

Our standard passive model for low wind locations.

These openers are responsive to temperature swings and automatically open or close your window vents properly moderating the greenhouse climate.

Passive Ventilation

'Gigavent' Non-electric

For high wind locations, upgrade your passive model with this option.

Active Ventilation

Electric Exhaust Fans

For an extra boost of air movement, our standard active ventilation system includes quality Canarm exhaust fans and waterproof thermostats.

Active Ventilation

Circulation (HAF) Fans

For long narrow greenhouses, upgrade your active ventilation system with these ceiling mounted circulation fans.

Optional Accessories

A wide range of unique and specialized greenhouse additions allow for varied use and function. Explore the options we offer and make sure to include your choice(s) in the quote request.

Insulated Wall

To get the most from your greenhouse during winter months, we recommend an insulated wall on the North side of a greenhouse.

With three inches of 'Owens Corning' exterior rated waterproof foam board, the wall boasts an insulation value that exceeds R-17.

The outside of the wall is completed with treated exterior plywood sheathing, vapor barrier and solid wood siding boards.

The interior of the wall is completed with cedar shiplap boards for a attractive and durable finish.

Solar Water Barrels

We provide and install water barrels for passive solar heating and cooling

Each individual barrel will provide approx. 2 degrees of heating and they can be conveniently located under a bench top.

Each barrel occupies a 2' by 2' space and are best located along the interior North wall.

Example - a 10' long greenhouse can hold 5 barrels on one wall, for a maximum of 10 barrels utilizing both walls.

Water Spigot Hookup

What would a greenhouse be without a water source to keep your plants hydrated and healthy.

We make it easy and cost effective to bring water to your greenhouse using your garden hose.

Just attach your hose to the outside wall connection and enjoy water from your greenhouse spigot.

Electrical Connection

From grow lights to space heaters, our 110 volt quick connect electric hookup easily brings power to your greenhouse.

Two plug leads inside the greenhouse allow you to connect several devices at the same time.
